Niche Finder uses a personality assessment and OCEAN profile to match your skills with promising business ideas across 23 pages for entrepreneurs.

What exactly does this assessment measure?

Three things: your existing talents, credentials, and experience; your genuine interests and disinterests across a range of work domains; and your Big Five (OCEAN) personality traits, measured through realistic scenario questions rather than abstract statements. The results combine all three — a niche only makes your top 5 if it fits your talents, your interests, and your personality, not just one of the three.

How long does it take?

About 25-30 minutes. It's built to feel more like a well-paced conversation than a clinical survey — one question at a time, no long forms.

Why do some questions ask me to rate a specific scenario instead of just asking about myself directly?

Scenario-based questions ("here's how someone responded — rate how correct that response would be for you") produce more honest, less self-flattering answers than direct statements like "I am organized." People are generally better at judging a described behavior than rating themselves in the abstract, and it reduces the tendency to answer the way you wish you were rather than how you actually are.

What happens with my answers after I finish?

They're used to calculate your trait scores and match you against the niche database. Your results are saved so you can revisit them via your personal results link, and you can optionally have them emailed to you.

What is the Big Five / OCEAN model, and why did you use it instead of something like Myers-Briggs?

The Big Five — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (framed here as Emotional Stability) — is the personality framework with the strongest and most consistent research support in psychology. Unlike type-based systems such as Myers-Briggs, which sort people into one of 16 fixed categories, the Big Five measures each trait on a continuous scale. That matters here specifically because it lets the matching engine make fine-grained comparisons between your profile and a niche's ideal profile, rather than forcing everyone into a small number of boxes.

Is Myers-Briggs not scientifically valid?

Myers-Briggs remains popular and can be a useful, approachable way to reflect on your preferences, but it has weaker peer-reviewed research support than the Big Five — particularly around test-retest reliability (people often get a different "type" when they retake it) and its binary categories, which don't reflect how personality traits actually distribute in the real world (mostly along a bell curve, not a 50/50 split). We chose the Big Five because it's better validated for exactly what this tool is trying to do: compare your traits, on a spectrum, against what tends to predict success in a given field.

Is there real research connecting personality traits to entrepreneurial or career success?

Yes, there's a genuine body of research linking traits like higher Openness and Conscientiousness to entrepreneurial outcomes, and different trait combinations to success in different types of work. That said, this research describes tendencies and correlations across large groups of people — it does not mean any individual with a given trait profile is destined to succeed (or fail) in a particular field. Personality is one real, meaningful input among many.

How were the niches in your database chosen and rated?

Each niche in our database is rated on the personality traits, talents, and interests generally associated with people who succeed in that field, based on available research and domain knowledge. These ratings are necessarily generalizations — real people who succeed in any given field come in many different personality profiles. Think of each niche's "ideal profile" as a well-informed pattern, not a strict requirement.

Is this assessment scientifically "accurate"?

The Big Five questions are designed using established psychological principles (balanced, scenario-based, reverse-keyed items to reduce bias), so your trait scores are a reasonably good reflection of how you described yourself today. But no self-report personality assessment — including this one, including clinically administered ones — can claim to perfectly or permanently capture who you are. Treat your scores as a genuinely useful starting point, not a verdict.

Can my results change if I retake the assessment later?

Likely yes, at least somewhat. Personality traits are relatively stable but not fixed — they can shift with major life experiences, and your talents, credentials, and interests can change even faster. Mood, context, and how carefully you're reading each question on a given day can also nudge your answers. If your results feel off, retaking it at a different time is completely reasonable.

Does a high-fit score mean I'll succeed in that niche?

No — and we want to be direct about this. A high fit score means your self-reported talents, interests, and personality traits line up well with the patterns we associate with that field. It says nothing about market conditions, timing, capital, competition, effort, or the countless other factors that actually determine whether a specific business succeeds. Plenty of successful entrepreneurs in any given field don't match the "typical" profile at all, and plenty of people who match it closely will still face real challenges. Use your results as a lens for self-reflection and a starting point for research — not a guarantee, prediction, or substitute for your own judgment.

Why didn't my "obvious" strength show up as a top recommendation?

The top 5 aren't just your highest individual talent matches — they're niches where your personality, interests, and talents all point in a similar direction at once. A skill you're strong in might still not surface if your personality profile or stated interests pull toward something else. Check your bonus niches list and talent category breakdown for a fuller picture beyond just the top 5.

Should I make a major career decision based on this alone?

We'd genuinely discourage that. This is meant to be a well-informed, evidence-aware starting point for thinking about direction — a way to see patterns in yourself you might not have put into words yet. Any real career or business decision deserves additional research, honest conversations with people in the field, and — for anything high-stakes — professional guidance from a career counselor, mentor, or advisor who knows your full situation.

What do you do with my email address?

It's used to save your results so you can revisit them and, if you choose, to send your results to you directly. We don't use it for anything beyond that without your knowledge.

Can I retake the assessment?

Yes, any time — there's a "Retake assessment" link on your results page. Each attempt is scored independently. Retaking is free while you're browsing as a guest; signed-in account holders are charged a retake fee ($14.99, or $4.99 if you've already unlocked a full report).
